my point was that Homer, like Derpy, is a character whose stupidity is played up to cartoonish over-the-top levels for laughs, not a cruel portrayal of a mentally disabled person/pony. I don’t think a two-minute scene of broad slapstick featuring Rainbow as the frustrated straight man constitutes a vicious attack on the disabled community, and i think a lot of the blog posts i’ve seen declaring it so come off as shrieky and hysterical. though while i (strongly!) disagree with your conclusion re: the simpsons, i’m happy that you are consistent about it, because that was the other point i was trying to make in comparing the two. i wondered if people would be so hard on derpy if she was actually funny. (because i’m not championing her as a character, she’s really uninteresting in that regard)

This reminds me of a Christian movie review website that marked movies down on their Christian-friendly score because they contained things like “conflict” or “characters who dislike each other.” The Bible contained those too!

I’m sorry, sometimes you’re going to have a character that causes a problem. Sometimes other characters will get frustrated by this. Sometimes someone falls down because they’re clumsy and you don’t have to rush to the emotional support of people with inner-ear disorders.

Sometimes the word “derp” means something derogatory. Sometimes a bunch of able-bodied people could stop and check their privilege before deciding that they *obviously* know what is and isn’t okay to laugh at.

Verbal logic kills me because, for anything more complicated than the ones with a right-triangle grid, I rarely know where to start or how much I’ve accomplished. (“Everyone has three ice cream flavors out of these seven. Mary doesn’t have vanilla.” Okay, but I can’t really cross off anything mentally based on that, puzzle.)

Trivia, when it falls into that valley between “I know a good number of these” and “Looking these up is fun/challenging”, can also be something I dread.

Oh, and “extract something undetermined from this excerpt of writing”, when there’s no reasonable toehold to be found after a couple of minutes, drives me up the wall.

You may have noticed that there wasn’t a webcomics column last week. Sorry. I was… drinking heavily and watching Christopher Nolan movies while complaining about Christmas, which caused the editor of this site to send me this video [NSFW]. Apparently that’s the sort of crass humor Laura Hudson finds appealing. And during the holidays! For shame.

Anyway, as always, your input is appreciated. I find something new each week, and it’s thanks to people leaving suggestions that I usually see the best stuff. Also, those leaving critical comments are extremely valuable to me as well. I want to get better at these weekly round-ups, so point out mistakes, poor judgment, and bad taste when you see me falter.

Wow, he starts off strong with ACC, and then implodes. Chimneyspeak is badly drawn sexist crap, and Antics is worse drawn transphobic crap!

It bears repeating as much as possible: that “joke” in Antics was transphobic, and pulling out the first two panels as so inherently funny as to need no commentary manages to be even more so.

Yeah, that’s why you don’t go down to the funeral home where they’re having your jerk cousin’s viewing and start saying bad things. Hitchens was a public figure, and his family and close friends would have to deliberately seek out anything I said about him.

So, I wonder what’s the worst that could have happened if instead of posting that 2 days after he died, the OP had waited maybe a whole week?  You know, enough time for the corpse to cool off a little.

Hitchens was not exactly known for his respect of the recently dead, especially if he felt they had been notably unworthy of respect.

So, yes, he was a bloodthirsty warmonger who ranted about “Islamofascism” and women’s shortcomings. May we soon get past any influence he had on anyone on those subjects.
